Not surprisingly, architects who have committed themselves to this endeavor see it differently. Indeed, many historic restorations often involve an amalgam of strategies aimed at preserving the past. Restoration may be coupled with extensive remodeling, renovation, adaptive reuse, or adding onto the historic artifact. Boundaries blur and allow architects to creatively combine new forms and materials with the old. A number of buildings presented on the following pages demonstrate the various forms these efforts take, where old and new vocabularies could collide—but don’t. What about restoration and renovation where the architect’s hand is less visible?
